Etchingham Festival
Etchingham Festival 2022
Tuesday 28th June at 7.30
I am delighted to be playing at the Etchingham Festival again in the summer. Sadly we had to cancel the last concert due to covid, but this will be my third appearance in the wonderful St. Mary's Church (The Assumption of the Blessed Mary and St. Nicholas) on the superb Steinway that is always made available and which was the brainchild of the late Peter Katin who lived nearby. Peter's recordings, on LPs, were my first introduction to classical music when I was a boy.
This will also be one of my first recitals after the publication of my new book, Reading Franz Liszt: Revealing the Poetry Behind the Music, which is due in May. The book will be on sale at the recital and I will be very happy to sign copies. An excerpt can be found here.
My programme will of course include some Liszt, and I'm planning to include Debussy's early Arabesques which I've actually never performed. One of my students wanted to play them so I decided I'd better have a look myself. What an oversight! I've discovered what I should have know all along, that they are exquisite miniature masterpieces of considerable charm and intricacy. They have to be joined by Clair de lune which was written at much the same time.
I will publish my full programme here once I've given it further thought.
